Easily estimate fuel costs of driving to places within Australia and a whole lot more.....
There are 2 main sections to Fuel Estimator - Australia:
You can 'add', 'remove' and 'move' places to edit your itinerary and 'Get Details' as much as you like.
Details include Fuel Costs, Driving Times, Distances, Litres for each route and totals for your whole itinerary.
Go to Fuel Estimator - Australia and start using or keep reading below for further details and help.
Fuel Estimator - Australia uses the Google Maps API to determine driving distances between places. These places can be a full street address, town / suburb or place-name such as Adelaide Airport, Big Banana etc (as long as they are on a road).
This is where you enter places in the order you intend to travel. You need to enter at the very least a 'Start' place and an 'End' place. You can 'add' up to a maximum of 23 places plus the 'Start' and 'End' places. You can also 'remove', 'move up' and 'move down' places to change the order using the control buttons to the right of the place field. Navigate between place fields by 'clicking' on the place field or by 'tabbing' (- move to place below or Shift-Tab to move to place above).
You can also add places to your itinerary using the Search The Map feature.
After you type an address into a place field, verification of that address will be performed once you move away from that field by 'tabbing' or 'clicking'. While that address is being verified, a circulating icon will appear next to the address field. You can continue entering addresses into other place fields while a verification is happening. You won't be able to 'add', 'remove', 'move up' or 'move down' any places while any place is being verified.
If the address is found to be valid, the circulating icon will change to a green 'tick' otherwise the field will be shaded and 'Unknown Address' (or other error) will be displayed. If multiple places are found for that address, a list of found addresses (maximum of 10) will be displayed below the field. You can click on one of these addresses to enter it into the field or type a more accurate address and verify again.
The more information you can enter into an address field, the quicker the search will be and with less 'Unknown Address' and 'Multiple Place' results. E.g. Entering the town 'Orange' will result in an 'Unknown Address' whereas entering 'Orange NSW' will return a successful result. Entering '32 Railway St' will display 10 places but not '32 Railway St Banksia' which would be displayed if you entered '32 Railway St NSW'.
Once you have entered all your required places and they have found to be valid (green tick icon), click the 'Get Details' button. Any 'empty' place fields will be removed (except 'Start' and 'End' which are required fields) then distances will be calculated and the map will display your places and routes. The values entered into the Calculator will automatically be used to determine your itinerary fuel costs.
This is where you can enter a vehicle's 'Fuel Consumption' and a 'Fuel Price' to estimate fuel costs for your itinerary. As you enter these values, fuel estimates will be automatically calculated and displayed on your itinerary results.
The 'Fuel Consumption' and 'Fuel Price' fields are pre-filled with example values. These are default values and will most likely provide meaningless results for you! You will need to enter your own vehicle 'Fuel Consumption' and a 'Fuel Price'.
Enter a value in decimal form and select either 'L/100km' or 'km/L' using the radio buttons.
You can find standard fuel consumption values for some vehicles at greenvehicleguide.gov.au.
To help you determine a vehicle's fuel consumption, click the 'calculator icon' on the left of the 'Fuel Consumption' label to display the Fuel Consumption Calculator.
There are a few web sites where you can find fuel prices but they are mainly promoting the 'cheapest' price and are more centred around capital cities. If travelling in Western Australia, FuelWatch is a good source of fuel prices. Otherwise, MotorMouth is another source but currently displays very few country prices.
For detailed monthly prices and trends, see AAA and download the spreadsheets.
Determining an accurate figure for a vehicle's Fuel Consumption can be difficult as there are many factors involved such as road conditions, driving habits, traffic, vehicle maintenance etc. The most accurate way is to keep a log of the amount of kilometers driven and the fuel used to drive those kilometers.
Your fuel consumption in kilometers per litre will be distance travelled divided by fuel used.
eg: Trip meter = 356km. Fuel used = 28 litres. Fuel consumption = 356 / 28 = 12.71 km/litre
Your fuel consumption in litres / 100km will be fuel used divided by distance travelled times 100.
eg: Trip meter = 356km. Fuel used = 28 litres. Fuel consumption = 28 / 356 x 100 = 7.86 l/100km
Fuel Estimator - Australia includes a calculator to help you determine your Fuel Consumption.
Once the 'Get Details' button is clicked, all results are displayed in two boxes below the 'Calculator'.
Displayed beneath 'Calculator Form'.
Displayed beneath 'Result Totals'. Includes a list of your itinerary places (in order) and details for each route.
Clicking on a place name will centre the map on that place. You can then easily 'zoom in' on that place using the map zoom control. An information window of that place will also be displayed.
The Google 'Search The Map' (Googlebar) is located in the bottom left hand corner. It will search for the term you enter and display results above. The reults it returns are dependant on the part of the map being displayed.
If you don't know the location or address of a business, place etc. that you would like to use in your itinerary, enter it into the Googlebar and click 'Search'. A list of found places will be displayed along with labelled markers on the map.
Clicking on the resultant place markers will pop-up an 'Info Window'. In the 'Info Window' will contain an 'Add To Itinerary' link which you can click to automatically add the place to your itinerary.
The found place will be added to the first empty place in your itinerary. If there are no empty places (and your itinerary contains less than 25 places), a new place will be created before your 'End' place and the result added there. You can shuffle around your itinerary using the itinerary controls to put them in order.
Fuel Estimator - Australia will work with most modern popular browsers with Javascript enabled.
If you are using a browser that is not on the above list, Fuel Estimator - Australia could still work but may exhibit strange behaviour.
Although up to 25 places can be calculated, the more places used and the greater distances between places, the more resources the application requires from your computer. Depending on your computer specifications (and browser type), you may see your system slow down and get script warnings when calculating many places and large distances.
There is currently a known issue with Opera not displaying the polyline on the map when many places and large distances are being calculated (although Opera seems to be the fastest and most efficient at executing Javascript).
